At sea

Wednesday 6th December

My sleep had been rather disturbed during the cruise. I eventually decided that there was some engine noise from over the corridor, coming at odd hours and disturbing my sleep. There's not much you can do to avoid noise on a cruise ship!

I visited the lobby to take photos of the completed Christmas decorations.

Afternoon tea is always a big event on a Cunard ship. Music is provided on piano or harp or string quartet. Champagne is available for those who wish to make it a special occasion. Tea starts with a procession of the waiters, in white coats and white gloves, bringing in the tea pots.

The World Club cocktail party was due to start at 5.15. A group of us met up at 5.00 to make sure we would get seats.  There was already a queue. There are two entrances to the cocktail party. There is a long queue at the main entrance for those who wish to shake the Captain's hand and a shorter queue at the other end for those who are happy to just walk in. That's us! As per my usual practice I ordered a strawberry daiquiri, as did Catherine. They took so long to come that we thought the waiter had forgotten about us and ordered another each. Of course they came within two minutes of each other! We had nearly ordered a third as we had despaired of either of them coming. (It was fun but the drinks were still affecting my dancing later that evening, added to the movement of the ship. My balance was off when I had to turn.)

The early dance session was in the Yacht Club, up on Deck 13, so I did not go. Roy told me that it was rather rocky up there, so I was glad not to have attended. There was enough movement on Deck 2. This has to be expected going through the Bay of Biscay.

The Starlight Ball that evening was very pleasant. Dan and Alyona danced twice. There was a dance competition with 9 couples. The format has changed since my time. All 9 couples dance at the same time. They all have to do a Cha cha, Waltz and Jive. While John was still halfway through announcing it, one woman stood up and rushed over to Roy to ask him! There was no chance for anyone else. I received two offers to take part but was not interested. It was fun to watch and I think the right couple won. I did not dance much, which was probably all for the best after my daiquiris, but I stayed until the last dance.
